Slate Roofs

Slate Roofs Slate has been known for centuries as one of the most beautiful and durable roofing materials. Historically, some of the world’s greatest buildings have used slate roofing. Today, examples of slate roofs can be found at Cambridge University and Oxford University in England, as well as on the Legislative Building in Toronto, Canada.

What makes slate so important as a roofing material? Let’s take a look.

Strength & Durability

Slate roofs are extremely strong and durable. Natural slate has many desirable qualities from a roofing perspective: it is waterproof, fire resistant, a good electrical insulator (which lends energy efficiency) and an overall strong material. Slate delivers a long-lasting roof with a lifespan of 80-100 years or more, providing excellent long-term value. In fact, some slate roofs have withstood the ravages of Mother Nature for several hundred years! Other types of manufactured roofing materials, such as metals and asphalt, would need to be re-roofed three or four times within this same period.

Water Resistance

Slate has an extremely low water absorption index (less than 0.4%), making it a waterproof material and thus very suitable for use in roofing. Due to its low water absorption, slate is very resistant to frost damage and breakage due to freezing.

Minimum Maintenance

Because slate is such a rugged and durable material, it is very resistant to mold and mildew. This, combined with slate’s other beneficial properties such as fire and water resistance, means that slate roofs require very little maintenance over time, making them extremely cost efficient.

Unique Appearance

Slate is famous for its beautiful, natural stone look. What makes slate so unique is that no two pieces of stone are identical in appearance – even when they are sourced from the same quarry. Subtle differences exist in the colour (no dyes are used and pigments are not controlled), thickness and texture of the stone. As such, slate can be customized to compliment various architectural styles for different roofing projects. A 100% natural product, slate is admired for its unique beauty.

Value

In the roofing world, slate roofs are a “once-in-a-lifetime” investment. This fact, coupled with slate roofs’ aesthetic appeal, has a big impact on building valuation. A slate roof generally increases the value of a house by approximately a quarter of a million dollars.

Because slate is such a unique material, the installation of a slate roof is a particular skill that requires a specialist with experience in the field of slate roofing. Slate roof installation requires not only the mechanical knowledge needed for waterproofing, but also an aesthetic touch in order to ensure a unique and beautiful result.

“Because of their longevity, we were initially interested in metal or synthetic slate roofing materials, rather than more traditional asphalt. When we first spoke to Shay, we explained this to him. Shay was receptive and interested.”
